Pileated Woodpecker Excavating Stump
I usually see Pileateds on the trunk of a tree in or near the woods behind my house, but today this one was vigorously excavating the stump from a tree that was taken down 1-2 years ago when I installed solar. She was undisturbed when I pulled into the driveway quite close to her. I was able to watch for a long time (15 mins, or so) as she pried strips of bark off the stump to get to a meal underneath. Once she had done that in several places around the stump, she flew off to investigate other stumps nearby. Finding it impossible to capture a still shot, it finally occurred to me to take a video.
For those unfamiliar with Pileateds, they are the largest woodpecker in North America-nearly three times taller than the Downy Woodpecker. This one didn't look as big as usual to me, but maybe that's because she was somewhat squatting on the ground. I don't know if young ones would be out on their own yet. You can read more about this impressive bird and hear its raucous call at www.audubon.org/news/10-fun-facts-about-pileated-woodpecker.

I enjoy watching the shadow play as much as the sculpture. Oftentimes it looks quite different from the sculpture configuration. I took another video earlier in the day when the sculpture was moving a little faster, but was more in the shade. That one is at ua-cam.com/video/dXu34a34B28/v-deo.html
Grousey Limping - Oct. 19, 2016
Переглядів 1407 років тому
I hadn't seen Grousey for 6 days, but he surprised me by hopping up onto the deck when I was out there on Oct. 19. Then I noticed that he was limping, so I took a video to compare to any future sightings. I haven't seen him since, but my yard helper said Grousey checked on him on Oct. 27, but didn't stay long. Usually Grousey relentlessly pursues Nick when he's working in the yard, so perhaps G...

Grousey Attacks
Переглядів 1877 років тому
I anticipated that Grousey (a wild ruffed grouse who has set up his territory to include my yard) might be on patrol this evening when I took my compost out, so I wore my tall boots. It's a good thing I did. Sure enough, he detected my presence and was right on me, doing his usual thing of trying to corral me into as tight a position as possible. Any maneuver on my part is countered by one on h...
Grousey's Two Sounds
Переглядів 60 тис.7 років тому
This longer video shows Grousey pacing back and forth between me and the tomatoes I'm trying to pick. Here, this wild grouse who has been following me for 3 months is making the less common moaning sound most of the time, but he also switches briefly to his more common cluck. I think he makes the moaning sound when he is in a more agitated state, but I don't really know the significance of it. ...
Grousey's "Moaning" Sound

Today Grousey "helped" me pick tomatoes or rather, he helped me NOT pick tomatoes. This wild ruffed grouse has been tracking me for the last 3 months. Sometimes he can be a real obstacle. As shown briefly here, he will pace back and forth in front of me to prevent my passage. And oftentimes he will follow me right up the steps to my door and wait on the landing. More commonly he makes a soft cl...

This grouse, whom I now call Grousey, has been keeping tabs on me and anyone who visits for the last 3 months. Today he followed us into the woods on a hike and paused to do a little preening on this log. I wonder if he will eventually choose it as his drumming log? Only time will tell...
Celebrating the Dark with Wendell Berry

At Winter Solstice, many in the Northern Hemisphere are celebrating the return of the light. But I also like to celebrate the dark. It's a time of year for going inside and nurturing the inner self. For me, it's a time of renewal that carries me through the seasons that follow. At this time of year, especially, I often reflect on this favorite short poem by Wendell Berry.

    I had a grouse following me - around the same time this vid was uploaded. Yes it's a territorial thing - the male grouse will try to chase you off and keep an eye on you. Also I had a push manual reel mower and that was another grouse to the male grouse - so that's what brought it on.

    There's a grouse that shows up almost every time I am outside and follows me around or just hangs out while raking, gardening, etc. He comes within two feet and makes both of these sounds plus some other ones. I wish I knew what he's saying because he is definitely talking to me. I haven't seen him drum his wings yet, but he does circle around me or arc back and forth - left to right as the grouse in your video does. Sweet bird. I wonder if he has a mate...or thinks I should be his,, since I also walk on two legs. Ha! Ha! He does kind of feel like a pet...

      Grousey was my daily companion for 6+ months, but I think his close attention to me was based on his defending his territory, which he unfortunately set up to include this human who didn't realize she was supposed to stay in the house! He would equally run after anyone else who ventured onto his turf, and peck at their heels if need be. The drumming typically takes place on a selected drumming log or other perch -- and during the spring mating season. If you check my channel, there are a few other videos of Grousey's behavior, including one where he gets quite aggressive and attacks me as I am simply trying to go to/from my garden. If you have a peaceful companion, lucky you!

      @@patnelson476 Photogenically, I thinkmVT backroadsxand small towns have the edge, but I love the ocean and the White Mountains, two features Vermont does not have (the Greens are nice, but not the Rocky peaks and fabulous vistas of the Whites). Portsmouth, Wolfeboro and Hanover are my 3 favorite NH places, while Woodstock, Manchester/Dorset, and Chester are my 3 faves in VT. However, there are many other small towns (less well-known) that are a delight. Rt 100 in VT takes one through a great number as it meanders up the state. About the only places I don't care for are South Burlington and much of Rutland, and much of the southern communities in NH have morped into Boston suburbs. They are 2 of the smallest states (I have seen all 50), but pack a real scenic punch!

    I was devastated to learn that this foghorn is no longer triggered automatically. I used to love hearing it when I stayed in the area. Now the Coast Guard, as part of a nationwide effort, opted to switch to a “mariner-activated system” in which boaters use VHF radios to trigger a foghorn only if they happen to need it.

Here in Ireland they have been switched off for good as they were replaced with radar signal things instead of foghorns :/ Still wish they were operating although , maybe i`m wrong there could possibly be some foghorns still operating around Irish waters but at off shore Lighthouses ( but i still don`t know really to be honest since new technology keeps coming in like every few years :/ )

    Thanks, Joey. I'm enjoying your comments. You are much more knowledgeable about all of this than I am, tho your first comment prompted me to do some online research. I read that the FA-232 can be heard only 1/4 to 1 mile away. I certainly hear the foghorn that I recorded from further away than that.

  • @JoeyHoya
    @JoeyHoya 12 років тому

    It looks like the foghorn (the primary one, heard most of the time) you have in the video was not working for a while and the "beeper" was doing its job as the backup: "West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in the Fog " posted by xxa455xx , for example. Some lighthouses have had the type at West Quoddy replaced by the FA-232 "beeper" since it uses less power - this has happened at Boon Island, Watch Hill, and some others. It also cannot be heard as far away.

  • @Patphoto44
    @Patphoto44 12 років тому

    I just read this about foghorns in this location: "In 1903, a Canadian firm began marketing the diaphone, a fog signal powered on compressed air. ... West Quoddy Head quickly adopted the diaphone and used it until the 1930’s when a modern electric foghorn replaced it." This must have been an improvement over the cannon that was first used.

  • @manga12
    @manga12 12 років тому

    wish it were a diaphone they are soo hard to come by, I know there are a few out there that still have functioning ones they use for guests and for show, but just not all that many of them.

    BTW, this tone is what I've always associated with this foghorn. I think the Channel light (the sparkplug) has a higher pitch, so I wondered if some of the other videos I saw were picking up that one instead -- but I didn't try timing them, etc.

  • @Patphoto44
    @Patphoto44 12 років тому

    It was taken last week. I noticed that this signal seems to have a lower pitch than ones I heard in some other videos. Is that what you are referring to?

  • @JoeyHoya
    @JoeyHoya 12 років тому

    Is this a fairly recent video? Others from the past several months have the two FA-232 "beeps", making me wonder if they've turned off the higher power signal.
